Cradle Cap

Cradle cap is recognisable by the appearance of scaly, yellow to brown patches on a babies head. Cradle cap patches may also appear on your baby's ears, neck, face, behind the knees or in your baby's armpits. Cradle cap is not a symptom of poor hygiene and is not itchy or sore, so your baby will not be aware of it. Cradle cap can be managed by washing the affected area regularly with shampoo and using a soft baby brush to remove some of the flakes. Cradle cap scales can also be softened by applying baby oil before brushing to remove the flakes. Cradle cap often appears within the first couple of months and will go after a few weeks or months. Do not pick the scales as this can cause an infection. If you are concerned that your baby's cradle cap has become infected you should visit your Doctor or healthcare advisor.
